Foi durante esse período conturbado que ele escreveu a primeira versão de Aleluia, escrevendo mais de 80 versos antes de tocar nos quatro que se tornariam a música final.

Quando você as ouve pela primeira vez, você pode pensar que as letras são religiosas, mas existem muitas alusões sexuais combinadas com as referências bíblicas.

Lançada em 1984, a música foi um sucesso e passou a ser coberta mais de 200 vezes por muitos artistas diferentes.
